Family Counseling

When one person is struggling, the whole family feels it.

A family is a system. When one member struggles, everyone adjusts, and those adjustments become patterns of their own: the peacemaker, the one who acts out, the parent who over-functions, the one who withdraws. Family counseling works with the pattern, not with a single identified problem person.

We start with whoever is willing to come. Sometimes that is everyone; often it is two or three people, and the rest join later or not at all. Each person gets to be heard without being interrupted, which for many families is the first new thing that happens.

The goal is not a family without conflict. It is a family that can have conflict and stay connected, where a hard conversation ends with everyone still in the room.
