Men's Work

Beneath the armor there's a life waiting for you.

Most men we work with didn't come to therapy easily. They came because something finally cracked — a marriage strained past bearing, a numbness that stopped lifting, an anger that scared them, a success that turned out to be hollow. And almost all of them say some version of the same thing: I don't even know what I feel. I just know this isn't working.

That's not a personal failing. Most of us were trained out of our inner lives early — taught that feeling is weakness, that need is shameful, that our value is what we produce and provide. The armor worked, for a while. But armor doesn't discriminate: it keeps out grief and it keeps out love, intimacy, aliveness.

Men's work is about taking the armor off deliberately, with support, rather than waiting for life to tear it off. In individual work we use IFS and somatic approaches to get underneath the anger, the drivenness, the checked-out evenings — to the parts of you that have been waiting a long time to be heard. In group work, something else becomes possible: the experience of being real with other men and being respected more for it, not less. For many men that experience alone is revolutionary.

After 28 years of doing this work, we can tell you the far side is worth it. Not a softer life, necessarily. A truer one.
